If you’re looking for a happy belly and a happy mind in the Midlands, there is an incredible haven nestled in Burton-on-Trent that’s well worth a visit.
Hoar Cross Hall Spa Hotel is one of my favourite spots when I’m looking for somewhere to detox, unwind, and get some proper R&R. Over the years, I’ve visited this establishment in diverse company – on a girls’ trip, with my mum, with my husband, and more recently, as a solo spa-goer!

I’ve enjoyed every visit, but on my latest self-care day, I got to experience Hoar Cross with several enhancements – notably the amazing Spa Terrace that gives this place a true resort feel. And yes, never let anyone talk you out of going to the spa by yourself (not even that little voice inside!) – it might just be the best decision you ever make.

I started my day with a run and a gym session before heading to the Nordic Heat & Ice suite. I got into contrast therapy recently so I was keen to spend some time in the sauna, steam room and ice shower. Annoyingly, the cold plunge is located in a different part of the spa, so I went to look for it only to find that it was actually too warm for my liking. So, I went to chat to reception who told me that, indeed, the indoor cold plunge was set to a higher temperature and that there was a colder cold plunge on the terrace set at 3 degrees. Careful what you wish for, my inner voice told me at that point.

I set out to find it and as I stepped onto the terrace, I suddenly realised why it was so unusually quiet downstairs. The Spa Terrace was where the party was happening – it was definitely a vibe up there, with lots of people in the jacuzzis, sipping drinks or lounging on the sun beds. You could’ve been forgiven for thinking you’d been transported to a resort in Saint Tropez!
Anyway, I made my way to the cold plunge and dunked for just over a minute. Feeling energised, I went to find a cosy spot to journal and read until lunch.

Come lunchtime, I was ready for a delightful meal (and I’ve never been disappointed by the food here to date!). I started with the smoked salmon, which was beautifully paired with a potato and pommery mustard salad and keta. For my main, I had the lamb tagine served with Moroccan couscous, and rounded it all off with a delicate vanilla pod panna cotta topped with fresh strawberries.

With hindsight, I probably should have opted for a lighter main, but my hunger got the better of my judgment in the moment! I also must admit that I still haven’t fully acclimatised to having lunch in a dining room full of adults wearing bath robes (myself included). It’s so bizarre!

With a nicely full tummy, I headed back to the relaxation zones to find a comfy lounger bed and listened to my audiobook until I dozed off. Once awake, I went to the saltwater pool and listened in on a sound bath while floating on a relaxation mat. I then made my way back to the Nordic suite for another round of contrast therapy, finishing off with a final 2-minute cold plunge out on the terrace.
Just like that, the day evaporated, but I felt incredibly recharged. Walking back to my car, I actually felt quite envious of the guests who were just arriving for their stays. Staying at the resort really is a lovely experience – the hospitality is phenomenal, guests are made to feel incredibly welcome and pampered, and the food is consistently delicious. I still remember the delicious steak I had for dinner there the last time we stayed!

It’s a wonderful treat for anyone looking for some well-deserved rest, and a fantastic gift idea for a loved one (they do offer vouchers). Booking in advance is highly recommended if you want to secure the lowest rates. You’re looking at around £129 - £189 for a Purity Spa Day, starting from £169 for spa days with treatments included, and overnight spa stays starting from £210 per person. There are also some great options available right now for a pampered Christmas or New Year, which are definitely worth a browse on their website. If you're extra serious about self-care and want regular access to the facilities, they also offer a membership.
Irrespective of the time of year, Hoar Cross Hall Spa Hotel is an absolute delight. It offers peaceful surroundings, hearty food, great hospitality, and plenty to keep both body and mind stimulated – whether you prefer structured activities, reading in a quiet corner, or simply relaxing and just enjoying being.

The magic of a well-cooked meal, the way a simple dish can bring people together, spark conversation, and create lasting memories. On Happy Bellies, I set out to explore and find hidden gems, so that I can indulge in telling stories around food that will make you want to go out and create your own foodie adventures.
