Before we dive into the food, let’s talk logistics. If you're planning a weekend getaway to explore the cathedral, the parks, and the incredible food scene, finding the perfect base is essential.
- The George Hotel: I am slightly biased here, as this is actually where my husband and I had our wedding reception after getting married at the Lichfield registry office! Located right in the heart of the city on Bird Street, it is a stunning, Grade II listed late 18th-century building. Originally a Georgian coaching inn serving the London to Chester route, it is bursting with history – the famous Irish dramatist George Farquhar even stayed at its predecessor back in 1705. It’s a wonderfully charming place to base yourself. 👉 Book The George Hotel (ad)
- Premier Inn Lichfield City Centre: If you are looking for reliable comfort on a budget, this Premier Inn on Swan Road is in a brilliant location. It is just a short walk from Lichfield City Station, Beacon Park, and the Cathedral, putting you right in the middle of the action. 👉 Find budget-friendly Premier Inn rates on Klook (ad)
- Boutique Airbnbs & Guesthouses: Lichfield is also home to some gorgeous self-catering options, from historic cottages to modern city-centre apartments. 👉 Explore Lichfield Airbnbs and Guesthouses (ad)
Now, onto the main event – where to eat!
Best for Kids (and 90s Nostalgia): Patty Freaks
Patty Freaks, in the City Arcade, is where my kids would eat every night if they could. I've been trying to pin the owner down for an interview for over a year, which tells you how much of a fan I am. It's pure nineties nostalgia: arcade games the grown-ups end up hogging, and a counter where you can buy and trade Pokémon cards while you wait. I haven't tried the veggie burgers yet since stopping meat, but the cauliflower bites in buffalo sauce are what I order every time, and the IPAs – on tap and in cans I've not seen anywhere else – are a reason to come on their own.

Local Tip: Whenever there’s a food festival in Lichfield, skip the pricey street food queues. Pop into Patty Freaks instead, grab a pint, and enjoy the incredible atmosphere for a fraction of the cost.
Best for a Special Occasion: Quill and Scholar
If you want to treat yourself to a beautiful, light meal in a bougie setting, Quill and Scholar is the place to be. It’s a gorgeous venue with a fantastic menu. I’ve had their crab, pork tomahawk and the classic fish and chips here, all of which were delicious. It’s my go-to spot for treating family; I've taken my mom, and it's also a wonderful spot for a lovely date night.

Best for a Relaxed Catch-Up with Friends: WIP
For delicious wood-fired sourdough pizzas and excellent craft beer, WIP is a brilliant hangout. The pizzas might lean slightly on the pricier side, but you are absolutely paying for the quality and the vibe. They have a stash of board games, making it the kind of place where you can easily chill for hours, sipping beer and catching up with mates.

Best for a Quick Lunch or Casual Family Dining: Rasa (BYOB)
If you are catching a show at the Garrick, grabbing dinner with the family or just need a quick, flavourful lunch, Rasa is a top-tier choice. Located near the market place in the city centre, it offers a brilliant lunch menu packed with fantastic Pan-Asian dishes. It is also Bring Your Own Beer (BYOB), which makes an evening out here incredibly affordable. You can find a full debrief on Rasa in a previous post where I looked at the Japanese food scene in Lichfield.

Best for a Curry: Major Curry Affair (BYOB)
This spot absolutely surprised me, and it is easily one of the best dining experiences I've had recently. Serving up phenomenal Bangladeshi cuisine, Major Curry Affair offers an intimate, authentic restaurant vibe – which means you must book ahead because tables are limited. The service is brilliant. As someone who isn't eating meat at the moment, I was thrilled to see fantastic fish options on the menu. The fish platter, okra curry, biryani, and madras are all completely delicious, and nothing beats the sound of their sizzling mixed grill approaching the table. We celebrated my birthday here this year, and it was a truly memorable evening.

The Historic Gastro Pub Gem: The Whittington Arms
If you are looking for a fantastic gastro pub just outside the city centre on Tamworth Road, this is an absolute must-visit. The building perfectly balances a rich history with a hospitality culture that feels increasingly rare. For the first half of the 20th century, this structure served as the clubhouse for the Whittington Heath Golf Club, and it still retains that distinctive architectural weight and community feel. Inside, the dining room strikes a beautiful balance between rustic warmth and modern vibrancy. With impeccable service, a modern menu, and a wonderfully dog-friendly, cozy atmosphere, it’s a brilliant treasure for a comforting meal.

The Best Breakfast & Brunch: Thyme Kitchen
Tucked away at the Curborough Countryside Centre inside beautifully converted agricultural buildings, Thyme Kitchen serves up the best breakfast in Lichfield. The setting is gorgeous, housed in an old traditional drift barn, and the outdoor seating is wonderfully dog-friendly. Their thoughtful menu champions local produce and beautiful presentation. My personal favourite is the smoked salmon and poached eggs on focaccia, topped with rich hollandaise and a genius scattering of chilli flakes. I can also vouch for their breakfast naan (featuring locally sourced bacon, chilli jam, and tzatziki) and their unreal homemade baked beans that carry a smoky hint of chorizo. Do not leave without trying their life-changing lemon drizzle and blueberry cake (I sometimes pop over there just to grab a slice!) – just be sure to arrive early on weekends as spots vanish quickly!
